Why It’s Important for Your Child to See a Kids Dentist

Kids DentistA kids dentist is a dentist (recognized by the American Dental Association) that specializes in the oral health of children from their infancy, through the various stages of childhood, until their teen years. As one, we also provide information and educational resources to help parents to make informed decisions, thus taking good care of their children’s teeth and gums.

Kids dentistry is very specialized since taking care of small children requires a gentle touch, the ability to make a child feel comfortable, and the precision to care for small sensitive teeth. This makes it important to take your child to a kids dentist in order to ensure that their dental appointments are pleasant and effective.
The Importance of A Kids Dentist

The American Academy of Kids Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Kidss (AAP) recommends that, because most children begin to get their baby teeth in the first 6 months of life, every child should first visit their dentist within six months from the time they have their first tooth, which should be by their first birthday. By the time children reach age six or seven years of age, they begin to lose their first set of teeth, which are replaced by a permanent set. Without proper dental care, children face possible oral decay and disease that can cause a lifetime of pain and complications. Today, early childhood dental caries, which is an infectious disease, is five times more common in children than asthma, and seven times more common than hay fever.
The AAPD has said that it is important to establish an early and often relationship between the kids dentist and patient. This is because early oral examinations aid in the detection of the beginning stages of tooth decay & other oral health problems. Early detection is essential to maintaining good oral health, identifying and modifying bad habits, and treat as simply as possible any problems that arise. This includes cleaning, straightening teeth if necessary, and possible kids periodontal disease. It is a great deal easier, and more sensible, to treat dental disease in the earliest stages before it begins to cause decay.
Parents are given a program of preventative home care, including an introduction to products for brushing, flossing, & fluoride treatments. Parents are also given risk assessment information on thumb, finger and/or pacifier habits, with advice on preventing any injury to a child’s mouth and teeth. Nutritional counseling and information on the child’s growth and development and also essential weapons in the fight for good dental health through the early stages of their development.
When it comes to your children, they are not just small adults, and it is unreasonable to expect them to be cooperative during a dental exam. As a kids dentist office, we are trained to know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable and at ease. When necessary, we can provide a child with sedation so that they can fall asleep or at least be drowsy during a procedure in order to help them to stay still. When it comes to your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth, we offer a wide range of treatment options and training for their care. Therefore, you can be well assured that we will provide the best possible care for your child.
